Re: Duanes Syndrome

Dawn, my son was diagnosed with duane's syndrom when he was 3 yrs old. The first ophthalmologist told us there was nothing that could be done and that this was a nerve problem. He did not diagnose this as Duane's syndrom though, it was when we took our daughter to a ophthalmologist because she did not do well with her eye test at her pediatrician's office. We decided to have both children checked by the second Doctor. Our daughter was fine however, our son was diagnosed with Duane's syndrom immediatly. The doctor did suggest surgery to correct the cosmedic aspect of this disease however this would not correct the actual disease itself. This was 13 yrs. ago. Our son had surgery and looks great (remember this is mom talking) but the most curious thing about this is that he has never done well in school. He has attended catholic school K-8 and was not able to make the grade for high school. He has attended a public school now for 2 years and has caught the attention of the school psychologist who because he seems to struggle and try so hard, seems to think this could be due to the duane's syndrom. All other activities of this boy's life are normal. He water skis, snow boards, has superior hand-eye judgement etc., it just seems to be something with his ability to read and process information, retain it and test out on it. He has his tests read to him and passes them without a problem. I'm going on and on ... if you would like to discuss this further, please do not hesitate to e-mail me. Talk to you then. Paula
